JUst so you all do not think I am crazy: here's the site: www.womeninmining.org/about-history.asp and here is their opening paragraph from their site: WOMEN IN MINING was founded in Denver, Colorado, in 1972 when three women contacted mining companies, and other related firms, to ascertain interest in developing an organization to provide education about the industry. Within a few months, the fifteen charter members invited industry representatives to attend a reception featuring U.S. Senator Gordon Allott as guest speaker.
Rockin' Hank Randall & The Hocking Valley Hoodlums has added a photo to the pool: First, the political disclaimer: I would not be writing this if it were not for coal, but there has to be a better way. Sadly, until cheap coal is just about gone, and all the money which can made from it will indeed be made, it does not seem like much will be left unturned in the digging... This ticks me off every time I drive by. It is political bull. This sign is obviously promoted and paid for by AEP to cover their crimes against humanity- callous, wanton destruction of the earth to make money. Miners memorial? Are there any state money supported miners' memorials in Ohio anywhere??? You know the answer. The "women in mining" group from the bottom of the sign is a shell group for PR for the mining industry. See my other photo of this sign for more on that. ************************************** There's not a human miner mentioned at this "show". There is a big shovel, and a few big posters in glass of the machines which powered the shovels. And there is more bull about the company's reclamation efforts. I do not remember strip mining being such a grand and glorious show back then, and if you think that AEP or Southern Ohio Coal or any of their alphabet companies really reclaimed eastern Ohio, fly over it with Google Earth. Check out these photos from the day: www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3769093717/ www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3769104853/ www.flickr.com/photos/rbglasson/3617997606/ www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3769924468/ www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3769919702/ www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3769911220/ There are more... courtesy of the US government. NOW people, the next time you read the bullshit from the companies leveling West Virginia for cheap coal, remember- they will quit when all the coal is gone and southern WVa looks worse than this; (And it will, there is more' and cheaper coal there) or they will quit when enough pressure is brought to Washington to seek and spend on the alternatives. Here's a thing I use when I am faced with two sides of an argument... if big corporations and political power are running slick campaigns to suck people in; and the other side is a bunch of people who are struggling in every way to get their message out.... I always go against the big money ads.
